(If you use the Beanie Baby strategies you can tell the to use "Stretchy Snake.") I can tell you that before our school used this program, we ended up with lots of kids that couldn't read, because they didn't have strategies to help them. The more they practice this, the better they get.

Make sure to teach the kids to put together their sounds after they've coded the words. (We don't use the phonemic awareness aspect, becuase we use Michael Heggerty's program during the morning meeting time.) I also rarely do the boardwork, or do a very shortened version of it.

I can teach the new lesson, and do both sides of the paper in about 25 minutes. I would also suggest shortening the lesson a little. There are those that learn to read by site, and the phonics is just icing for figuring out hard words. You'd be surprised how many kids are phonetic readers. From my experience, it comes together, and most kids learn to read from it. My suggestion is to stick it out and see how it goes. I know that it seems pretty strange when you first start teaching it. (plus, I could take the time I spend on saxon phonics and incorporate readers workshop!!!) My team members I believe, do it because they are told to, but I just don't see the benefit at this point. If anyone sees a great benefit of coding words please share with me.
Saxon phonics kindergarten lessons series#
I have a couple of parents who think it is the best thing in the world but I just don't agree.Īny suggestions? Also, our reading series teaches two phonics concepts a week, and it doesn't coordinate with the saxon lessons. Our school only uses the saxon phonics in Kindergarten and first grade. I think a greater emphasis should be on sight words and word families.does anyone agree or am I just plain crazy?
Saxon phonics kindergarten lessons code#
I work with a team of two other first grade teachers and being the new teacher, I don't want to shake anything up but I think it would be much more beneficial for a student to read a word by sight and understand it's meaniing than to be able to code it but have no idea what it means. It takes them so long to code the words that by the time they can read each word in the sentence, they have no idea what the sentence is about. Does anyone besides me think that the coding is a major waste of time? Also, our Shurley English program has them coding words as in subject noun, verb, preposition etc. My children can code like crazy, but they can't read the words. A HUGE part of Saxon phonics is coding words with breves and macrons and marking out voiced letters and sounds ect. Speak Kindergarten English - Coversations for little kids to practice speaking. Saxon Phonics takes my class a very long time each day. Phonics Games & Videos Online - Teach Your Child to Read with Phonics. We also use the Saxon phincs program and the Shurley English program. Wow, haev things changed!! I teach at a private school where we are required to use a basal reader. I have previously taught second grade but am just comming back after a very lengthy maternity leave.(my daughter is in K this year!!) This is my first year teaching first grade.
